Empowering women takes on a special meaning at Gorilla’s Coffee as we recognise the exceptional women contributing to Rwanda’s coffee industry. In this blog, we shine a light on those involved in growing, washing and roasting and representing Gorilla’s Coffee to the world, Rwanda’s favourite coffee.
Gorilla’s Coffee, a brand of the Rwanda Farmers Coffee Company (RFCC) that is known for its exceptional quality and distinct flavours, owes much of its success to the efforts of women.
Women play crucial roles in producing and maintaining the quality of our coffee, as well as ensuring sustainable practices within the coffee industry. These collective efforts not only empower communities, but also foster a more inclusive and efficient coffee supply chain.
The Gorilla’s Coffee journey starts on farms across the country where we work with 4,000 farmers, of which 36 percent are women. This is where our coffee is grown, nurtured, hand-picked, washed before being brought to our roastery in Kigali, the largest of its kind in East Africa.
At our roastery, 30% of the team are women. They work tirelessly to ensure that our impact on the environment is minimal and that future generations can continue to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
At RFCC, we are working to empower women and support their professional growth. A number of women hold leadership and management roles within the company. One of these women is Bonny Uwera, our Procurement Officer.
“I really enjoy working at Rwanda Farmers Coffee Company because my work not only sustains my needs but also has an impact here at the office and in the community. My day-to-day work involves overseeing the supply of every bag of Gorilla’s Coffee, until it is ultimately ready for consumption,” says Bonny.
The women of RFCC also help to market Gorilla’s Coffee at prestigious global coffee events, including the recent Rwanda Day 2024, the UK-Rwanda Business Forum and coffee exhibitions in Seoul, Dubai and Chicago as well as across China. These events allow the team to connect and learn from the global coffee community.
Liliane Umwari, Sales Administrator at Rwanda Farmers Coffee Company, manages customer relationships, receiving and handling orders, as well as representing the company at exhibitions. Liliane recently represented Gorilla’s Coffee at the 6th China International Import Expo in Shanghai, the UK-Rwanda Business Forum, the World of Coffee Dubai Expo, and the 2024 Specialty Coffee Expo in Chicago, USA.
